Pricing commercial drone work is not about choosing an impressive hourly rate. It is about charging enough to cover planning, travel, flight operations, data processing, reporting, insurance, equipment wear, administration, and profit. A job that requires only 30 minutes in the air may still consume most of a working day.

Choose the right pricing model
- Project price: Best when the scope and deliverables are clear. Clients know the total, while an efficient operator retains the benefit of a repeatable workflow.
- Half-day or full-day rate: Useful for inspections, construction sites, and uncertain field conditions. Define included hours and overtime.
- Per-acre rate: Appropriate for some mapping and agricultural work, but always include a minimum mobilization charge. Ten difficult acres can cost more than 100 open acres.
- Per-deliverable rate: Works for standardized outputs such as a basic roof photo package, progress-photo set, orthomosaic, or annotated report.

Build every quote from the same components
A dependable quote accounts for discovery and planning, airspace research and authorization, travel, site orientation, setup, flight time, data transfer, processing, quality control, reporting, delivery, client communication, and a contingency allowance. Charge separately for specialist equipment, visual observers, survey control, rush service, extra revisions, and work outside the agreed scope.

A realistic small inspection quote
Consider a commercial roof inspection located 35 miles away. The job requires one hour of planning, 1.5 hours of round-trip travel, two hours on site, and two hours for image review and a basic annotated report. At an internal target of $125 per hour, labor contributes $812.50. Add travel, software or processing costs, and a modest risk allowance, then round the proposal to a clear project price—perhaps $950 to $1,100 depending on access and deliverables.
If the client wants only organized photographs, the price may be lower. If they expect thermal analysis, measurements, engineering conclusions, or a formal condition assessment, the scope and price should increase—and the operator must avoid promising professional conclusions outside their qualifications.
Protect the price with a precise scope
Your proposal should state the site, capture plan, deliverables, file formats, turnaround time, included revisions, weather policy, client responsibilities, payment terms, and expiration date. Define what triggers a reflight or change order. Weather delays should normally lead to rescheduling; a client-requested return after successful collection should normally be billable.
Most importantly, do not discount an unclear job just to win it. Ask what decision the client needs to make with the data. Once that is clear, you can price the actual outcome, exclude work that is not included, and deliver something more valuable than a folder of aerial photographs.
