Commercial UAV Expo returns to Las Vegas next week at a moment when drone companies are being forced to rethink what they can import, which systems they can sell and how they will operate beyond visual line of sight.
The event is scheduled for September 1–3 at Caesars Forum. Organizers expect more than 3,700 professionals and over 240 exhibitors, placing regulators, manufacturers, service providers and commercial operators in the same venue just days before new U.S. drone tariffs take effect.
That timing gives the 2026 conference unusual significance. The FAA’s Part 108 rule remains unpublished, the FCC is reconsidering which foreign-made systems may enter the U.S. market, and federal policy is pushing domestic manufacturing while counter-drone companies promote new—but often still unproven—defense architectures.
An Expo Shaped by Policy Rather Than Product Launches
The official Expo preview describes a program built around commercial integration, regulation and operational deployment. Its projected attendance figures should not be confused with a completed count, but they would represent growth from the 3,393 professionals and 230 exhibitors reported for 2025.
For attendees, the central question is no longer simply which aircraft has the best camera, endurance or payload. Procurement teams must now evaluate tariff exposure, FCC authorization, supply-chain origin, replacement-part availability and whether an operating model will remain viable under future BVLOS rules.
Part 108 Is Nearing a Decision—but It Is Not Yet the Rule
The FAA’s Normalizing Unmanned Aircraft Systems Beyond Visual Line of Sight Operations rulemaking is listed at the final-rule stage in the federal regulatory agenda. Until the final text is published, however, operators cannot assume that every responsibility, qualification standard or recordkeeping provision from the proposal survived review unchanged.
Existing Part 107 limitations and individual waiver requirements therefore remain controlling. Expo discussions can help organizations prepare, but no conference presentation can substitute for the final regulatory language, its effective date and subsequent FAA guidance.
AirData’s newly announced scale illustrates why the issue matters. The fleet-management company says it has processed more than 65 million flights involving over 850,000 aircraft and 470,000 pilots. Those are company-reported platform figures, not an FAA census, but they show how much operational evidence large programs already generate before routine BVLOS expands.
FCC Decisions Are Redrawing the Equipment Market
The FCC’s UAS Covered List actions will be another major topic in Las Vegas. Foreign-produced drones and critical components placed on the list generally cannot obtain new FCC equipment authorization, which is normally required before radio-frequency devices can be imported or marketed in the United States.
The policy is not a blanket ban on every drone already in use. The FCC lists specific exemptions, including systems on the Blue UAS Cleared List and certain qualifying domestic end products, through January 1, 2028. Previously purchased, lawfully authorized aircraft are not automatically grounded.
At the same time, the FCC is considering additional restrictions on the future importation and marketing of certain previously authorized foreign-produced equipment. Enforcement is also becoming more tangible. On August 11, the FCC revoked equipment authorizations held by Odyssey Robot LLC after finding material misrepresentations about U.S. production. That action does not establish that every origin dispute will produce revocation, but it shows why vendors’ sourcing and certification claims now require careful documentation.
Section 232 Tariffs Arrive September 3
The most immediate business deadline follows two days after the Expo opens. Under the August 13 Section 232 proclamation, the initial UAS tariffs take effect September 3.
- A 100% additional duty applies to covered drones over 25 kilograms, thermal-equipped drones, docking stations and designated sensitive components.
- A 25% duty generally applies to covered drones weighing 25 kilograms or less.
- Qualifying products from specified allied countries may receive 10% or 15% treatment.
- A separate 25% duty on certain less-sensitive components is delayed until 180 days after the proclamation.
“Up to 100%” therefore does not mean every imported drone receives the maximum rate. Classification, aircraft weight, installed capabilities, component type and country-of-origin conditions all matter. Domestic Manufacturing Plans Still Need Execution
Federal pressure to reduce foreign dependence is encouraging alternative supply-chain models. Toray Advanced Composites, IGCS International and Lacks Carbon Fiber announced an August 11 collaboration supporting the Drone Dominance Program. Toray would supply pre-impregnated carbon- and glass-fiber materials, Lacks would process components and IGCS would route them into the defense supply chain.
The companies say the model could support integration at depot level and potentially in the field. The announcement is a commercial collaboration—not an Army production award—and it does not establish that field fabrication has been demonstrated at scale. Its significance lies in the proposed separation of component production from the traditional airframe-OEM model.
Counter-UAS Concepts Demand Careful Scrutiny
Counter-UAS will also have a prominent place in industry discussions. Wrap Technologies announced that laser directed-energy capability is being advanced for its WrapShield architecture through an expanded relationship with Frenel Imaging. Company documentation describes approximately 3-kilowatt portable, 6-kilowatt vehicle-mounted and 9-to-12-kilowatt fixed-site configurations.
Those specifications should not be mistaken for a field-ready WrapShield product. Wrap’s own release says integration remains in development, demonstration and qualification are incomplete, and definitive agreements for the underlying collaboration have not been executed.
Directed energy may eventually reduce dependence on expensive kinetic interceptors, but cost-per-engagement claims depend on acquisition cost, power, atmospheric conditions, tracking performance, dwell time, safety controls and authorization. Those operational details matter more than headline power ratings.
Part 107 Reaches Its Tenth Anniversary
The Expo also begins three days after the tenth anniversary of Part 107, which took effect August 29, 2016. The rule replaced the earlier case-by-case Section 333 pathway for many ordinary small-UAS operations with a standardized remote-pilot and operating framework.
More than 493,000 Remote Pilot certificates had reportedly been issued by December 2025. That number describes certificates issued—not necessarily pilots actively flying or current on recurrent training—but it shows the scale of the workforce created around the rule.
What Operators Should Watch in Las Vegas
- Part 108 details: Separate educated preparation from claims about unpublished final requirements.
- Tariff classifications: Ask vendors for documented origin, applicable duty rates and replacement-component plans.
- FCC status: Distinguish equipment already authorized from new models and proposals from adopted restrictions.
- Manufacturing capacity: Look for awarded contracts, production volumes and delivery dates—not just partnership announcements.
- Counter-UAS maturity: Ask whether a system has completed independent testing, qualification and lawful operational deployment.
Commercial UAV Expo 2026 will not resolve every uncertainty facing the industry. It will, however, provide an unusually concentrated view of how regulators, manufacturers and operators plan to respond. This year, the most valuable conversations may be the ones that replace ambitious claims with verifiable timelines, documented sourcing and realistic paths to deployment.
